Punu Masks were worn by costume stilt dancers and said to represent the spirit of beautiful young women who returned from the dead to participate in village life. They are admired for their beauty and are wonderful pieces of art. The whitened face makes reference not only to the dead but to anti witchcraft techniques. Witches were believed to be most active and powerful at night, and whiteness referes to light and clarity. which stands in opposition to witchcraft.
