Originally used to preserve elaborate hairstyles and keep dirt out of recently styled or treated hair, these Ethiopian head rests are imbued with not just a sense of history and culture, but also the character of its previous owner. Despite its ornate carvings, these items were purely practical and so their aesthetic form and detail is a true testament to the artistic expression of the Oromo and Amhara people of Ethiopia.
To the Amhara people, they are known as yagertera which translates to 'pillow of my land', while the Oromo call them boraatiz, meaning 'tomorrow you'.
Whether a conical example, as seen here, or a columned variation, the organic and distinctive forms of these head rests make them a beautiful decorative accent, with an incredible personal story behind every piece.
